dottie2I’m Dottie and I’m a 21 year old artist from central California about to complete my BFA in Pictorial Art at San Jose State University. My first memory of art is from watching an artist paint flowers on TV. I don’t know who the painter was, but I remember watching her in awe as she explained what she was doing so viewers could follow along. I didn’t have any paints at that point, but I got out my crayons and colored pencils and tried to follow her instructions just the same. At the time, I thought I did a pretty good job. (I didn’t.) But it put me under the impression that I really was an artist and I think believing that until it happened is part of what made it possible. Creating became such an intrinsic part of me that I don’t think it can be separated. Within it is the way I think, the way I see, and the way I understand the world and reflect upon it.

I work in a variety of drawing and painting media, but my favorites at the moment are charcoal, oil, and watercolor. As an introverted person, I really love drawing and painting figuratively as a way to understand people, and right now I’m working on a series that is very gestural and expressive in a way that depicts hopefully the weight and mass and tension that the individual carries as well as the breath and life in the moments between as those instances of weight and mass devolve into the ethereal. And of course, I’ll never stop drawing flowers.
